Our mission is to help you boost your odds of admission to every college on your list.

Traditionally, we’ve offered our services to a select group of clients in the form of a single comprehensive counseling package. Because we have a limited number of slots for comprehensive clients, and to address a growing demand for our services, we created Collegica.

No matter where you live, Collegica enables you to connect with experienced college admissions counselors who are trained to help you become the strongest college applicant you can be.

Collegica’s online services are available during select times and dates. For more information on these services and their availability, click HERE.

We know college admissions.

Collegica is a team of premier college admissions counselors who provide private college admissions guidance to students and families from all over the world.  We love what we do, and so do the students and families we work with (click here for a list of our comprehensive clients’ 2015 acceptances).

Our team includes graduates from Princeton, Harvard and Boston University, some of whom are former college admissions officers and all of whom hold an advanced degree in education.

In addition to private meetings with students and families, Collegica counselors conduct live college admissions workshops and presentations. Our team leader, Collegica co-founder Cassie Nichols, is the author of The College Essay Trap, along with numerous articles on the college admissions process.

“The College Essay Trap offers as nifty and insightful a set of advice as I’ve come across. As someone who has read tens of thousands of such essays over the years, I found myself nodding in strong agreement with each ‘trap’ [Nichols] describes and how best to avoid it.”

– Fred Hargadon, former Dean of Admissions
at Princeton, Stanford and Swarthmore

You’re serious about college admissions, and so are we.

SERVICES

Comprehensive College Essay Review

Click here to purchase a Comprehensive College Essay Review

With this service, we provide a comprehensive review of your college essay, complete with notes and suggestions. Cassie Nichols, co-founder of Collegica, wrote and published a popular book on the college essay called The College Essay Trap, so essay reviews are one of the things we are known for.

Once you’ve finished a draft of your main college essay, it can be difficult to view it objectively. Likewise, since the essay is about you, it can be difficult for people who know you well–parents, teachers, or friends–to remain objective when they view the “you” presented in the essay. In addition, the college essay isn’t–or shouldn’t be–anything like the analytical, formulaic essay everyone learns in high school. So even for the best writer, it can be difficult to know whether the essay you’ve written is appropriate for your college application.

Send us your essay, and we’ll provide a thorough review of your essay’s topic, content, and structure, focusing on what your essay will look like to a college admissions officer. We’ll also provide you with notes and suggestions for further revision, if necessary.

  2. After paying, you are given instructions on how to upload your essay draft. We also have a brief questionnaire for you to fill out.
  3. A Collegica counselor sets aside the necessary review time within the next 72 hours (excluding weekends and holidays).
  4. Once our counselor is finished reviewing your essay, you receive an email with detailed edits, as well as a summary of the review and suggestions for improvements, if applicable.

College Essay Brainstorming Session

The college essay is difficult. For many applicants, it’s the most difficult part of the entire college admissions process. This session will help you choose an essay prompt, weed through the many available topics, come up with some you might otherwise have missed, and settle on a topic that really matters to you.

A great essay starts with a great topic: a topic that allows you to give admissions officers a glimpse of what really matters to you… and of who you are beyond the data that fills the rest of your application.

This session involves a fairly personal conversation, and can be lengthy… often an hour or more. We delve into your personal qualities and those unique experiences that are most likely to result in a topic that will help you write a compelling college essay.

Then, once we’ve decided together on the most effective topic, we create a brief outline for the essay: a sketch-level game plan that will help you approach the writing process with confidence.

Please note that this private online session is geared toward your main essay (e.g. the Common Application’s personal essay or the primary essay/personal statement required by most colleges).

*Important: This is a student-only meeting. Parents are an important part of the admissions process, but students must feel free to explore any topic they want with their counselor.

Student Strategy Session

When you’re ready to get specific about the next steps on your path to college, it’s time for a Student Strategy Session. During this private online session, a Collegica counselor will help you construct a detailed strategy that will include some or all of the following areas:

Course Planning

No matter where you are in your high school career, we’ll analyze your current classes from a college admissions perspective: how you’re performing in those classes, and what classes make sense for you to take next. We will also discuss your academic interests, and how best to develop them during your remaining time in high school.

Extracurricular Guidance

We’ll talk about what activities you enjoy outside of class: in your school, in your community and at home. We’ll talk about whether it’s advisable to expand those activities or to keep your focus on your existing interests. We’ll also discuss the factors college admissions officers consider when reviewing a student’s extracurricular activities.

Standardized Test Planning

We’ll help you understand the role standardized tests play in college admissions, and we’ll work with you to generate a testing calendar that makes sense for you. We’ll discuss one or all of the following exams, depending on your needs: the SAT, the ACT, SAT Subject Tests, AP and IB exams, and the TOEFL exam. (Please note that this meeting does not include any test prep tutoring.)

Summer Planning

Whether you volunteer in your community, take an extra class, or get a summer job, most colleges will care how you spend your summer months. We’ll discuss the options available to you, and help you make the most of your upcoming summer.

Parent Strategy Session

College admissions has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Parents who applied to college in the 70s, 80s or 90s often wonder how best to guide their child through the current college admissions terrain. The goal of the Parent Strategy Session is to provide parents with a strong overall understanding of exactly what their role should be as their child prepares to apply to college.

One of our most popular events in recent years has been our “Coffee Chat,” a live group counseling session for parents only, held at our headquarters in Santa Barbara, California. During these Coffee Chats—each run by an experienced college admissions counselor—parents ask general questions about the college admissions process.

Our online Parent Strategy Session is much like our Coffee Chat, with one key difference: it’s a private, one-on-one session. Each parent has our counselor’s undivided attention for up to an hour. This means that questions can be specific, and that the answers will be directly applicable to your child.

Our counselor will provide you with an individualized timeline that will enable you to anticipate and prepare for every step of the process, and will work to help your family survive this stressful time with as little friction as possible.

College List-Building Session

For obvious reasons, building a realistic, personalized college list is one of the most critical parts of the college admissions process. This private online session will help you get started.

Your college list is the foundation upon which much of your senior-year workload will be based. In our experience, students who take the time to build a college list that excites them—but is also balanced—have a much more successful and enjoyable senior year.

Prior to your appointed session time, you’ll submit information that will help a Collegica counselor formulate an extensive list of colleges for you to investigate. Then, during your session, we’ll discuss the factors that are important to you when considering colleges, and our counselor may make additional recommendations.

We’ll also discuss methods for researching each of the schools on your list. You’ll leave this meeting with preliminary college list containing 10-20 schools.

Application Season Strategy Session

Application season is one of the busiest times in your high school career. This period—roughly August through January of your senior year—requires a lot of planning and organizing in order to maximize your chances of successfully applying to each school on your list. In this private online session, a Collegica counselor will formulate an intelligent approach to this stressful—but rewarding—period.

A lot of what goes into this session happens behind the scenes. Before your appointed session time, you’ll complete some preparation material, and a Collegica counselor will begin to formulate an individualized Application Checklist Spreadsheet that includes each college’s deadlines and requirements.

Then, during the meeting, we’ll go over the Application Checklist Spreadsheet together and create a timeline for each of the components of the application process.

We’ll also discuss topics such as:

– Early application deadlines vs. regular application deadlines
– The required components of a college application
– What to expect during each month of application season
– The important steps that students often overlook after they click “submit”

We’ll use our years of experience walking students through every stage of application season to help you organize, prioritize, and ease the stress that comes along with this busy, exciting time.

As a high school freshman or sophomore, you’re probably starting to think about college. This private online session will help you understand what colleges value in their applicants, and what you should be doing during each year of high school to ensure that your options remain open.

As you start learning about colleges and college admissions, you’ll hear a lot of different opinions from a lot of different people. It’s hard to know what’s true, what’s not, and how you fit into the equation. When you finish this session, you’ll have a better idea of what choices to make—and what mistakes to avoid—along the road to college.

College Visits Planning Session

In this private online session, a Collegica counselor will help you create a realistic plan for college visits, and help you decide which colleges on your list should be prioritized.

Visiting prospective colleges is important for two reasons. First, it gives you a chance to envision yourself as a student at a particular college or university: walking around campus, observing student life, and picturing yourself in its classrooms. Second, many colleges will view your visit as an indication of your level of interest in their school, and will take that into account as they make their admissions decisions.

If you haven’t reached the college list-building phase yet, but are planning to travel to a certain region, we’ll work with you to develop a list of schools to visit. We’ll help you determine what time of year is best for visiting colleges, and we’ll discuss the steps you should take to plan each visit, how you can maximize your time on campus, and what you should do after the visit.

High school athletes who want to become college athletes have to deal with an extra layer in the college admissions process: athletic recruiting. In this 30-minute private session—conducted by Cassie Nichols, a recruited Division I college athlete—you’ll learn about the steps you can take to increase your chances of recruitment, and Cassie will discuss the role athletics plays in the college admissions process.

Other discussion topics may include:

– Your athletic career, past, present and future: a discussion about the level of athletics you engage in now, and how that will translate into the world of college athletics.

– The life of a college athlete: what you’re gaining and sacrificing when choosing to participate in college athletics.

– Communicating with college coaches: how to get on a coach’s radar, how to keep coaches interested, and what materials you’ll need to offer them.

College Interview Prep Session

This private online session will help you understand the role of the college interview in the admissions process, and will help you prepare for your upcoming interview through a mock interview session.

There are two parts to this private online session. In the first part, a Collegica counselor will help you understand the role of the college interview in the admissions process. This will vary depending on the college for which you are interviewing, and the type of interview you’ve scheduled (on-campus, alumni, Skype). While the college interview is not the most important part of the college admissions process, it does matter, and it can be intimidating. We’ll help you understand what a college admissions officer is hoping to learn about you from the interview—and what you can learn about the college.

The second part of the College Interview Prep Session is an actual mock interview. Our counselor will take on the role of the interviewer and ask questions that are common in these interviews. This will help you overcome any anxiety you might have about the interview, and it will get you accustomed to talking about yourself—which is exactly the point of the college interview.

A private counseling session is a one-on-one meeting with an experienced college counselor. As you can see by the menu to the left, we have specific packages for each major part of the process. If you need guidance that doesn’t fall into one of those categories, however, choose this option.

Application Review and Evaluation

Click here to purchase an Application Review and Evaluation

During an Application Review and Evaluation, a Collegica counselor will go through your application line by line, hunting for errors large and small, and will also make sure that all the components of your application are in line with the expectations of college admissions officers.

You’ve worked incredibly hard to get to the point where you have a finished application ready to submit. When you’ve stared at a wall of text for hours, it’s easy to overlook minor errors. At the very least, we recommend that you have someone with a fresh perspective review your application before you push the “submit” button.

That moment can be a little daunting. The act of submitting your college application is the culmination of a lot of hard work, and we have that fact foremost in our mind when we review our clients’ applications. Because of the importance of submitting the strongest application possible, our counselors dedicate a few hours to each review.

A few caveats: while we will look for problems in your application, including in your college essays, this service does not include a major essay edit. If your essay needs serious revision, we’ll let you know.

For this reason, we require a minimum 72-hour lead-time for our Application Review and Evaluation service. Ideally, you’ll book it much further in advance than that, in case you end up needing time to work on your application. Since we have limited slots available for this service as deadlines approach, the sooner you book it (and the sooner you finish your application) the better.

Click here to purchase an Application Review and Evaluation

  1. You add this service to your shopping cart and continue to the payment page.
  2. After paying, you are given instructions on how to upload a PDF version of your finished application. If the ability to save a PDF version is not offered by the application you’re submitting, you will provide a link to the application you want reviewed (e.g. the Common App) and the necessary login information. We will keep this information secure, and we will only use it to review your application. We will never submit your application for you.
  3. A Collegica counselor sets aside the necessary review time within the next 72 hours.
  4. Once our counselor is finished reviewing and evaluating your application, you receive an email with detailed edits, if applicable, as well as a summary of the evaluation.

This service includes a comprehensive review and evaluation of your college résumé draft.

Most colleges don’t accept a résumé with their application, or treat them as optional. However, résumés can be useful in a college interview, for a scholarship application, and as a reference when you’re filling out your activities in a college application.

A Collegica counselor will go through your résumé line by line, checking for errors and evaluating the contents from a college admissions standpoint. After our review, you’ll receive a detailed edit of your résumé, along with a brief summary geared toward helping you understand how an admissions officer might view it.

Click here to purchase a College Visits Planning Session

College Résumé Review and Evaluation

This service includes a comprehensive review and evaluation of your college résumé draft.

Most colleges don’t accept a résumé with their application, or treat them as optional. However, résumés can be useful in a college interview, for a scholarship application, and as a reference when you’re filling out your activities in a college application.

A Collegica counselor will go through your résumé line by line, checking for errors and evaluating the contents from a college admissions standpoint. After our review, you’ll receive a detailed edit of your résumé, along with a brief summary geared toward helping you understand how an admissions officer might view it.

College Essay Brainstorming Session

Click here to purchase a College Essay Brainstorming Session
